Friday, 30 July 2010Transport leaders save direct bus link

Greater Manchester's transport leaders have agreed to maintain a direct bus link between Hindley Green and St Helens.

The decision means passengers only have to buy one ticket and can make the full journey, without having to change bus services en route.

The 620 bus service is operated by Arriva with the section from Hindley Green to Ashton funded by Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) and the remainder, from Ashton to St Helens, operated commercially by Arriva.

This contract was due to expire in July, but GMITA members have agreed to continue funding the service to Ashton in conjunction with Arriva to ensure passengers travelling between Hindley Green and St Helen's do not have to change buses at Ashton and only have to buy one ticket for the whole journey.

Chair of the Bus Network and GMPTE Services Committee, Councillor David Sandiford, said: "We have a small budget to provide bus services in areas where there is a genuine need for them and they are not provided on a commercial basis.

"Given the inconvenience which would be incurred should passengers travelling between Hindley Green and St Helen's have to change buses at Ashton and also have to buy an additional ticket for the onward journey, we decided it was in passengers' best interests to continue with Arriva operating the full 620 route."

The 620 bus service provides an hourly daytime service from Monday to Saturday serving Hindley Green; Platt Bridge; Gerrard Street, Ashton; Vista Road, Haydock; Sankey Valley and St Helens Bus Station.
